Emily B. Rivet, MD, MBA, FACS, FASCRS is a Colon and Rectal Surgeon who is also fellowship trained and board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Her clinical practice focuses on benign and malignant conditions of the anus and rectum as well as screening and diagnostic endoscopy of the lower gastrointestinal tract. She also practices clinically in the field of palliative care. She is interested in the palliative care of seriously ill patients with surgical conditions such as gastrointestinal malignancies, traumatic injury, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Rivet enjoyed a successful practice in the community for seven years where she held leadership positions including Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at Maryview Medical Center, Physician Representative to the Commission on Cancer, and Physician Leader for Palliative Care at Maryview Medical Center. She is a member of the Surgical Palliative Care Committee and Opioid Task Force of the American College of Surgeons. She serves as Co-Chair of the In-Patient Pain Management Committee at VCUHS and as Physician Champion for Surgical Resident Education in Flexible Endoscopy. She has previously received grant funding from the American Medical Association to lead a multi-institution and multi-disciplinary program teaching breaking bad news communication skills using virtual modalities. Currently, she is a Co-Investigator for an NIH-funded study investigating barriers and facilitators for surgeon-patient communication about pain.

Dr. Rivet completed her medical degree at Washington University in Saint Louis, where she also did a General Surgery residency and a Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship. She achieved her undergraduate degree in the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine at the University of Chicago. During her surgical residency, she obtained an MBA degree at Washington University, focusing on economics and logistics in health care.

A substantial portion of Dr. Rivet’s effort is currently focused on health system quality improvement and education related to palliative care relevant topics such as the perioperative management of seriously ill patients.
