Biography

An advocate for healthy eyes, with a focus on lifelong learning

Dr. Kyra Dorgeloh believes every day as an eye doctor is unique — and so is every patient she sees.

“My specialty takes flexibility,” she says. “Every patient and condition is different and requires a thoughtful and personal approach.”

Dr. Dorgeloh performs comprehensive eye exams for both kids and adults. She diagnoses and manages eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and dry eye. She also fits and prescribes contact lenses and specialty contact lenses to manage corneal diseases.

Among her academic activities, Dr. Dorgeloh presented a poster on optic neuritis (eye inflammation) to the American Academy of Optometry in 2019. She was also lead author of a June 2020 article in Optometry Times about screening for diabetic retinopathy (damage to the eye’s blood vessels due to diabetes).

“Medical knowledge is constantly changing and evolving,” she says. “My specialty challenges me to be a lifelong learner to stay current with the newest research and latest technologies in eye care.”

Dr. Dorgeloh became interested in optometry while working as a technician at a private practice in Apex, N.C., and went on to receive her optometry degree from the State University of New York. There, she received the highest score of any of her fellow students on the first part of the National Board Exams. She also received the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, with the university citing her strong academic record, merit-based scholarships, and clinical experience. She also served on the board of the National Optometric Student Association.

Dr. Dorgeloh joined VCU Health following a series of optometric internships in New York City, including at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn and SUNY’s University Eye Center in Manhattan.

“Being a provider at VCU Health means being part of a greater team of talented doctors, specialists, nurses, and staff whose goal is to provide the best in patient care,” Dr. Dorgeloh says. “Collaboration between specialties allows for more seamless and comprehensive patient care.”

Advice to new patients: “Ask questions and be an active participant in your own healthcare. As providers, we are here to help you understand your conditions and provide the newest and best ways to manage them.”
