Biography

Virginia native Dr. Eric Swisher knows that attentive listening can make the difference between swift diagnosis and stalled treatment. “At the end of the appointment, I want my patients to walk away knowing that I really want to make things better for them,” says Dr. Swisher. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery and operative vaginal deliveries. His expertise encompasses both pregnancy care (obstetrics) and general healthcare for women (gynecology).

After 24 years in independent practice and following active duty in the U.S. Army, Dr. Swisher returned to VCU Health and its School of Medicine — his alma mater — to treat pregnant individuals and share his knowledge and expertise with young doctors. “I had actually planned to pursue a different area of medicine initially, but my experience in obstetrics during medical school at VCU changed me,” he says. “There are so many variables to labor and delivery, and there is also so much joy in caring for patients during this time.”

In addition to obstetrics care, patients often seek out Dr. Swisher because of abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction — conditions that can occur in women of any age. “These symptoms can often be overlooked, so it’s vitally important to listen to the patient and look for subtle clues to help get them the right diagnosis and care plan,” he says.

When surgery is required, such as treatment of endometriosis or a hysterectomy, Dr. Swisher often does so with minimally invasive surgery. This can improve the healing time and provide patients with the best aesthetic result possible, focusing on minimal scarring. Prior to VCU Health, Dr. Swisher also practiced cosmetic gynecological procedures, which he still incorporates with surgical scars.

“I think the objective evaluation from a good listener appeals to patients from any background,” he says. “Listening to a patient and understanding their health concerns is what leads to the best treatment.”

Advice to Patients
“Most conditions did not develop in a day, so often the best path of care involves some detective work and patience. Be persistent and take an active role in your treatment to make sure the process gives you the best possible solution.”
