‘I cannot see myself in any other specialty’

Alan Fitch is a trusted Physician Assistant (PA) on our orthopaedic team, helping patients treat their knee and hip pain, along with acute and chronic issues such as fractures, sprains, strains and overuse injuries. Active in year-round sports since childhood, Alan takes special interest in treating both elite and recreational athletes around central Virginia. “I knew from the beginning of my education and career in medicine that I wanted to have the opportunity to treat injuries and be involved in surgery,” says Alan, who received his training at The State University of New York at Stony Brook. “Becoming an orthopaedic PA just seemed like it was the right path for me. It provides me the ability to be an integral part of the patient’s diagnoses and treatment. I cannot see myself being in any other specialty.”

While treatment may include surgery, Alan notes the field of orthopaedics is constantly changing and some patients have additional options such as physical therapy or medication. “I personally always try to look at treatments besides surgery,” says Alan, known for his friendly bedside manner and relationship-building approach with each patient. “Our field has progressed so much in the past few years and given us better therapies and alternative treatments. Orthopaedic research and surgical options have also changed dramatically and allow us to offer our patients the most personalized care possible.”

For some patients, depending on their injury, a full recovery may never be possible, and Alan works with those individuals to adjust their lifestyle and activities to their new reality. “No matter your injury, even if it is life-changing, I tell people to never let it define you and always continue to do what you enjoy,” he says. “Adjust your ways, sure, but remain active, positive, and enjoy life.”

The reward for Alan comes when he sees a patient who was in an accident or lived with chronic pain, but has been able to return to their hobbies, work, and daily activities. “Those moments are what make this line of work so worthwhile,” Alan says.

Speaking of activities: Alan is a certified free diver and enjoys spending time outdoors and everywhere from the mountains to the beach – almost always with his family.  “I try to have a wide variety of interests that keep me busy all year long,” he says.
