Biography

A career dedicated to keeping patients safe

If you are facing diagnostic or surgical procedure in your heart or lungs, there’s a good chance Dr. Jeffrey Green will be standing close by to keep you safe.

“My role is to put the patient at ease during what can sometimes be a very scary moment in their life,” says Green, a board-certified anesthesiologist with VCU Medical Center since 2001 and the Boyan-Keenan Professor of Anesthesia Safety. While Dr. Green is recognized for his expertise in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and patient safety, he is also dedicated to quality and performance improvement throughout the health system. In that capacity, he serves as Assistant Medical Director for Performance Improvement at VCU Medical Center.

Dr. Green provides anesthesia to patients undergoing complex cardiothoracic procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement surgery, heart transplants, ventricular-assist device implants and total mechanical heart replacements. He is board-certified in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE), a complex procedure that uses ultrasound to take images of the heart and blood vessels before, during and after surgery.

He encourages all patients to “be your own advocate,” address questions or concerns up front with your anesthesiologist and care team and ask about your possible treatment options.

Outside of his clinical rounds, Dr. Green teaches the next generation of cardiothoracic anesthesiologists at the VCU School of Medicine and trains fellows, residents and students in perioperative TEE. He also keeps busy with his role in both the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Green, his wife Kathy, their two kids and two dogs are residents of Hanover County.

Affiliations and Professional Involvement

Dr. Green serves on many committees at the local, regional and national level, including the board of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and as a full examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is president of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists and the alternate director and Virginia delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologist’s House of Delegates. He serves as chair of both the MCV Physicians Self-insurance/Policy Committee and Claims Committee as well as chair of the VCU Health Medical Staff Quality Oversight and Mortality Review committees.
