When minutes matter, VCU Health’s stroke team saves lives

After Chwanda Johnson had a stroke, paramedics took her to the emergency department at VCU Medical Center. The neurosurgery team removed the blood clot blocking blood flow to her brain stem. Chwanda was moving around and speaking with her family just a few hours after surgery and has now made a full recovery. Her family has a new motto -- “If anything goes wrong, go to VCU.”

Everyone kept sending Kevontae home – except our epilepsy team

At one point, Kevontae Smith was having more than 200 seizures a day. Experts from VCU Health’s epilepsy program knew they had to act fast. After having a procedure called responsive neurostimulation (RNS), Kevontae has seen a significant reduction in seizures and has a better quality of life.
