This story was updated to announce all slots have been filled. (Updated: September 8, 2023)

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, affecting one in five Americans in their lifetime. In women, melanoma had the largest increase in new cases of all types of cancer from 2014 to 2018, according to the National Cancer Institute’s 2022 Annual Report to the Nation. Despite its prevalence, skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early.

VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) will host a free SPOT Skin Cancer™ screening by dermatologist Jade Kindley, M.D. Patients who have seen or are currently seeing Kindley are not eligible. All appointments have been filled.

To reach as many people as possible, this screening is limited to visible areas of the body and does not include rashes or treatment. A full skin check will not be able to be performed due to the short nature of the visit. Appointments are required and slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Recommendations for further care will be discussed as needed.

“We’re offering this screening as part of our commitment to community outreach for our rural area,” said Wendy Farley, interim oncology director. “We are accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, which means we raise standards and improve outcomes for cancer patients, with the ultimate goal of catching cancer earlier.”

If you are interested in a full skin check or treatment with Kindley, please contact the CMH Dermatology practice at (434) 584-5512. As Kindley is the only dermatologist in the immediate area, please be mindful that it may take several months for an appointment.
