Highest Level of Care in the Region

VCU Health takes pride in offering the best NICU in the region, providing 32 private rooms for babies and parents – with the equipment and staff to handle even the most complicated cases. Our obstetrician - gynecologists and maternal fetal medicine specialists handle all advanced medical care, including more difficult prenatal care and births. We also offer the most established midwifery practice to support low intervention prenatal care and birth. Women who come to VCU Health can choose between:

  • Centering Pregnancy Group prenatal care
  • Individual prenatal care appointments

VCU Medical Center is a Designated Baby-Friendly Hospital with 24/7 Care

VCU Medical Center is the only hospital in the Richmond area to achieve the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation, a rigorous 2-year training process to promote mother-baby bonding and breastfeeding.

Our full-service delivery team is available 24/7, so moms and babies stay on their schedule, not the midwife or physician’s daytime schedule. Labor can progress naturally and safely under our expert attention. In Labor and Delivery, our team always includes an obstetrician - gynecologist, anesthesiologist, resident, RNs and additional clinical support to handle any unexpected problems that may occur. Other benefits include:

  • Doctors who are internationally recognized for innovative and excellence in obstetrical care
  • Nurses who have Magnet© designation, the top credential for high-quality nursing
  • Midwives and doctors work in collaboration and have mutual respect for each other’s practices
  • Experience and expertise in low intervention birth options
