Need help

Neurosciences

Movement. Speech. Thought. Senses. With so many vital functions controlled by the brain and nervous system, it's crucial to seek the finest care when problems arise.

At VCU Health, we unite our nationally recognized programs in neurology, neurosurgery, physical medicine, rehabilitation and psychiatry to provide the best clinical care backed by cutting-edge research. VCU is strategically investing in our faculty of exceptional neuroscientists and clinicians and in our research infrastructure that supports them. This has resulted in a number of accomplishments:

  • First certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Virginia
  • A Designated Level 4 Epilepsy Center
  • Only health system in Central Virginia with two board certified neuro-oncologists
  • An ALS and Neuromuscular Clinic that provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach that is unique to VCU
  • A Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center that combines research, clinical evaluation and treatment along with education and outreach in a coordinated, comprehensive approach
  • Regional referral center for all spinal surgery trauma and Central Virginia’s only Neurosurgical Hybrid Operating Suite
  • Worldwide leader in traumatic brain injury, including 25 years as one of the federally-designated Model Systems Programs
  • The site for the largest depression trial ever underwritten by the National Institutes of Health
  • The first accredited fellowship in the U.S. for training psychiatrists to care for the medically ill

Philanthropic support provides our leaders with the flexibility to take smart risks and pursue their boldest ideas. It allows VCU to recruit and retain the brightest and most compassionate physicians and the scientists with the most innovative and promising ideas. As we train the next generation of neuroscience experts, it allows us to generate truly original knowledge that leads to new treatments.

Together, these efforts work in unison to fulfill our greatest need – helping to treat and care for our patients with neurological conditions and needs. To learn more about how you can support our neuroscience priorities, please contact Carrie Bickford at carrie.bickford@vcuhealth.org.
