Last revised:  July 30, 2019.

VCU InternshipOur Dietetic Internship is a supervised practice program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). Minimum requirements for entrance to a dietetic internship include a baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. accredited college/university or foreign equivalent, and completion of an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) curriculum. After successful completion of an ACEND accredited Dietetic Internship (DI), graduates are eligible to sit for the exam to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD or RDN) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).  Please note that beginning in 2024, a master's degree also will be required to sit for this exam. The master's requirement will not apply to those who obtain the RDN credential prior to 2024.

Our Dietetic Internship is a hospital-based program at a large, urban, regional referral and teaching institute, VCU Medical Center. VCU Medical Center is located on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), in Richmond, VA.

This Dietetic Internship is an 11-month program with a total enrollment of 16. One class of eight begins in early August and graduates in July (Spring Match) and one class of eight begins in early January with a December graduation (Fall Match). For each match cycle, six applicants are selected to complete the Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) concentration and two are selected to complete the Food and Nutrition Management concentration.

The internship at VCU Medical Center participates in DICAS (Dietetic Internship Central Application System). This requires that your application be submitted through a central application portal. The ACEND website provides additional information regarding the centralized application process. The deadline for application is February 15 for the Spring Match and September 25 for the Fall Match. Prospective applicants to this program should refer to Application Information and Admission Information for important details.
