Updates to clinical services and appointments

Updated January 11 to reflect changes to the Health and Wellness Library

At VCU Health, our policy is to serve everyone. We do not turn away patients, and we still accept new patients. The way we deliver care is changing to best serve all of our patients during COVID-19, while offering a safe environment for providing and receiving care. The safety of everyone is our No. 1 priority.  

We are responding to a sharp increase in COVID-19-related admissions to our hospital and expect this number to grow in the days and weeks to come.

We are implementing the next phase of our contingency plans to prepare proactively for more COVID-19 patients that are likely to need our care. The following steps allow us
to continue to provide the safest, highest-quality care to you.

Over the next few weeks, we will:

  • Increase telehealth appointments for routine outpatient visits and reduce the number of in-person appointments at our clinics
  • Reduce our non-emergency (elective) surgeries, procedures and diagnostic testing

Increasing telehealth appointments

Starting the week of Dec. 20, we will increase telehealth appointments for routine outpatient visits and reduce the number of in-person appointments at our clinics. To align with social distancing guidelines and slow the spread of COVID-19, we are limiting face-to-face appointments.

  • We are evaluating new and established patients over the phone to determine if a face-to-face visit is needed. Our providers will determine the safest way to care for our patients based on their individual needs. We offer virtual visits and phone consultations, and many patients already have chosen these options. If an in-person visit is necessary to safely evaluate and treat the patient, we continue to offer face-to-face visits, taking proper precautions to protect patients, providers and staff from COVID-19 spread.
  • We are also accepting new patients and transfer patients who need critical care. We are screening all transfer patients for COVID-19 risk factors, whether or not the request comes from an area with a reported COVID-19 outbreak. We continue to accept any patient with highly specialized, complex care needs, regardless of their COVID-19 test result.
  • We also continue to perform transplants, as these are lifesaving.

Everyone entering a VCU Health hospital or clinic must wear a face mask at all times. Face masks must cover both nose and mouth.

Taking extra precautions

For patients who screen positive for COVID-19 risk factors, we are taking extra precautions to contain the spread of infection and protect our other patients, team members and community. These include: 

  • We have divided the flow of patients coming to our emergency department for care. We are screening all patients upon entry, and anyone who screens positive for symptoms of COVID-19 is immediately separated from others and brought to a dedicated treatment area away from the other patient population.
  • Not every patient who tests positive for COVID-19 requires hospitalization. We have negative pressure rooms for providing inpatient care for COVID-19 cases if needed. These rooms are designed to help prevent the spread of an airborne infectious disease from an infected patient to others in the hospital by stopping the air from escaping the room.
  • We follow the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to provide the safest and best care to our patients in times of COVID-19. We update our response plan often, as the situation changes quickly and new information becomes available almost every day.
