Biography

Changing lives with nutrition and motivation

Registered dietitian Erin Taylor started memorizing electrolytes in middle school. “I have always been interested in nutrition, and the ways the body responds to foods and minerals in order to grow and thrive,” she says. But it wasn’t until graduate school that she realized she could use her wealth of health knowledge to change someone’s life for the better. She chose to become a clinical dietitian, working alongside physicians and nurses to provide patient care, and focused her master’s thesis on the association between childhood obesity and health behaviors.

At VCU Health, Erin works with individuals who are looking to lose weight through weight loss surgery. She also counsels clients who need to lose weight for hernia treatment, joint replacements, or to improve health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, acid reflux (GERD).

While not her official title, she also holds the role of Motivator: Positively encouraging patients and educating them on how to live a healthy lifestyle through diet and behavior changes. She offers counseling on healthy nutrition and lifestyle, setting small goals to ensure long-term success. Every appointment is geared towards listening to her patient, answering questions, and setting attainable goals.

“Putting the knowledge I give clients into motion is the most difficult step for so many people,” says Taylor, an avid hiker and baker. “But I gain the greatest satisfaction when I see it ‘click’ for a person – that moment when they truly come to understand how changes to their lifestyle can lead to a positive result in their life. When someone tells me they can finally play with their grandchildren or comfortably fly on a plane because of lifestyle changes, it’s the most rewarding feeling.”
