Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in The VCU Medical Center's Internship Program in Clinical Psychology at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. We have four full-time positions that are funded at a minimum of $18,500. The amount is currently being negotiated.  Our internship training program is open to pre-doctoral candidates in APA-approved Clinical and Counseling Psychology graduate programs. In selecting interns, we give priority to those students who have shown an interest in the area of child and adolescent psychology, with at least one practicum experience in the area.

After you read our materials, if you decide you would be interested in our program, we suggest that you apply as soon as possible. We use the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI). The application document is available at the APPIC Web Site http://www.appic.org in a variety of word processor formats. To apply to the VTCC Internship program, download the AAPI and complete it using your own word processor.

In addition to the completed AAPI, we ask that you send a written work sample that demonstrates your psychological evaluation skills (preferably a case in which you administered and interpreted both objective and projective evaluation instruments) and a written work sample which demonstrates your psychotherapy skills (e.g., a treatment review or termination summary of a child/adolescent case). We also ask that you provide us with an official transcript of your graduate work. The enclosed checklist includes all of the required components for the application package. The deadline for receipt of all application materials is November 15th of each year.

Selecting an internship is a very important decision, and we feel that written materials are often inadequate in providing a complete picture. Therefore, we do require an interview, either face-to-face or by phone, to facilitate finding the best match. For those applicants who appear to be a good match, we will begin scheduling interviews towards the end of December through mid- January . Although we do not require a face-to-face interview because of the potential expense to you, we do encourage you to visit with us if at all possible. We feel this is one of the best ways for you to see whether our program will meet your needs.

Our training faculty will review files as they are completed and begin to offer interviews to selected applicants in early December. We will make every attempt to contact all applicants, by e-mail or phone, by December 15 to notify you of your interview status.

I look forward to receiving your application materials and meeting you personally. I assure you that we will carefully study all of your information and keep you informed of your status. We will follow the timeline established by APPIC and adhere to the guidelines established by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers.

Sincerely,

William E. Fahey, Ph.D., LCP
Director of Psychology Training
