Gov. Tim Kaine has announced the launch of the Safe Routes to School program in Virginia. Local implementation of the SRTS program will aid in improving the health and well-being of children in Virginia, as well as the environment, as students are encouraged to walk and bike safely to school. In addition, VDOT announced the request for proposals for SRTS funding. Between now and 2009, approximately $13 million will be available as SRTS grants for infrastructure projects and education programs to encourage children to walk or bike to school.
