Woodstock Police Department Safety Day

The Second Annual Woodstock Police Department Safety Day is April 27, 2013 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. This event will have many demonstrations, including a child safety seat check station. The make-up date for the event will be May 4 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The location of the event will be at W.W. Robinson Elementary School at 1231 Susan Avenue, Woodstock, Va., 22664. Reality Check event for teen drivers

The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, in partnership with the City of Fairfax Fire Department and Safe Kids Fairfax, will hold a Reality Check event on May 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Reality Check events are designed to call attention to the danger of car crashes to teen drivers.

Both teens and their parents are invited to participate in this event. The student program will feature:

  • Educational program with a slide presentation by a trauma surgeon
  • A trauma unit visit and witnessing of a mock resuscitation of a trauma victim
  • An EMS unit visit with a tour of an ambulance unit and a Q&A with fire and rescue personnel
  • Presentations by teen crash survivors, sharing their experience

The parent program, held concurrently with the student program, will include information on:

  • How to be effective role models to teen drivers
  • How to coach and teach teen drivers
  • How to talk to your teen driver about decision making, alcohol and other difficult subjects
  • How to implement a parent-teen driving safety contract

The course fee for this event is $35, which covers on teen and up to two parents or guardians. To register, call (703) 776-3259 or email linda.watkins@inova.org.

Past events

Child passenger safety technician certification course

During the week of Sept. 10-13, 2012, Safe Kids Virginia partnered with the Safe Kids Central Shenandoah Valley and the Harrisonburg Fire Department to sponsor a 32-hour child passenger safety technician certification course. Eleven participants successfully completed this course and are now ready to serve Augusta County and the City of Harrisonburg to ensure all children are traveling safely. Thanks to all the newly-certified technicians for their dedication to children and their safety.

Summer Safety Fair

Children’s Hospital of Virginia and Safe Kids Virginia will host the Annual Summer Safety Fair on July 10, 2012 at Chimbarazo Park in Richmond. Children will have a great time while learning how to play and live safely. The event will be open to the public from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more, so please contact Shira Cantor to make arrangements. Her number is (804) 828-7035. Come and join the fun.

Click It or Ticket

To ensure everyone travels safely, Safe Kids Virginia is participating in the Click It or Ticket Campaign, May 21-June 3, 2012. Safe Kids Virginia would like to encourage everyone to buckle up on every ride. This includes adults and children alike. Don't forget to properly secure all children under eight years of age in an appropriate child safety seat and have a safe ride.

Child Passenger Safety Refresher Course

Safe Kids Virginia sponsored a Child Passenger Safety Refresher Course on July 17, 2012, at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Forty certified technicians completed the Refresher Course to earn six CEU's. In addition, the staff of the IIHS provided technicians with a tour of the facility and viewing of a crash test. Participants were able to visualize the results of the crash up close. Students shared positive comments, such as:

“Crash was a very good touch and very interesting.”
