The Hume-Lee Transplant Center extended its dedication to the field of transplantation in 1993, offering combined kidney and pancreas transplant to Type I diabetics with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). To date over 70 patients have received this life enhancing organ. The benefit of a pancreas transplant is for patients to become independent from insulin injections. Just like a kidney transplant is not a cure for ESRD, pancreas transplant is not a cure for diabetes. It is a treatment option that many diabetics find to be a better alternative than treating their diabetes with daily insulin injections.
The Pancreas Transplant Program offers:
- Simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplants (both organs come from a deceased donor). Please see more information about kidney transplantation performed by Hume-Lee Transplant Center .
- Pancreas after kidney (PAK) transplants. Please see more information about kidney transplantation performed by Hume-Lee Transplant Center .
- Islet cell transplantation
The following pages will discuss pancreas transplant in detail, so that you may make an informed decision if transplant is the right option for you.
