There are over 17,000 people waiting for a liver transplant in the United States . Unfortunately, there are only enough livers from deceased donors to perform about 5,000 liver transplants. This organ shortage has led to over 1,500 potential recipients dying every year. With the waiting times for a deceased donor increasing to up two years, it can be frustrating and difficult period for a family members and loved ones. One way you may be able to help is by volunteering to become a living donor. This decision is complex and it is essential that you discuss with your family, the recipient and your doctors to learn as much as possible about the procedure.
