ChemoTherapy (Transhepatic Artery Chemoinfusion)

image hereChemotherapy uses very powerful medications to treat the cancer. These medicines work by trying to stop the growth of cancer cells and killing the cancer cells. The medications used for chemotherapy not only target cancer cells, but also healthy cells. The chemotherapy is given directly into the liver artery for Hepatacellular Carcinoma (HCC).

Primary liver cancer, also known as HCC gets their blood supply from the hepatic (liver) artery. For HCC tumors, the chemoinfusion is given directly into the tumor, which stops or slows the tumor cell growth. For chemoinfusion, a catheter (small tube) is placed into the liver artery under x-ray guidance. The chemotherapy is then infused into the artery. The procedure takes one to two hours. The patient may be referred to a cancer specialist (oncologist), if additional chemotherapy is needed.
