The Hume-Lee Transplant Center is one of the pioneers in the field of transplantation and became one of the nation's first medical centers to establish a program in solid organ transplantation. The clinical transplant program originated in 1956 and is known for our rich innovative history and continued development and advances in transplantation. Not only does the Hume-Lee Transplant Center remain one of the oldest transplant centers in the country, the Center has performed many of the state's first-ever transplantation procedures, including:
- Virginia 's first human renal allograft was performed at MCV.
- MCV's Tissue Typing Laboratory opened - one of the first of its kind in the world
- Virginia 's first liver transplant
- Virginia 's first "reduced size" (segmental) pediatric orthotopic liver transplantation
- Virginia 's first adult segmental orthotopic liver transplantation
- Virginia 's first living related donor segmental orthotopic liver transplant was performed at MCV
- Clinical liver cell transplant program has achieved national and international recognition
- Virginia 's first established vascular access program
