Transplant Clinic has moved to Gateway

image here This past year the Hume-Lee Transplant Center at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) has moved into the newly built Gateway Building . The 10,000 square foot clinic is dedicated to the solid organ transplant center. This past year the Hume-Lee Transplant Center at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System expanded its inpatient unit to twenty seven beds to include a four bed intensive care unit. The Transplant Intensive Care Unit (TICU) is one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast and offers many advantages to the transplant population. The TICU was designed to decrease patient's susceptibility to infections, improve the quality of care by utilizing a patient focused model of care, increase the continuity of care given to patients, and decompress the utilization of other intensive care units within the facility.

A patient focused model of care used in the Hume-Lee Transplant Center 's inpatient unit has allowed streamline medical care. The nursing staff has been cross-trained for the TICU, intermediate care unit and the general floor. This has increased patient satisfaction by decreasing exposure to new staff and multiple staff though the hospital process. The patients' needs are met from admission through discharge. Additional teaching opportunities have been afforded because the patient is able to receive all of his or her care on one designated floor.

The opening of the TICU has lessened the usage of the other ICUs at our facility. In this time of health care, ICU beds are in more demand. The Hume-Lee Transplant Center has been able to assist in offering additional ICU space for VCUHS.

The opening of such a progressive unit is consistent with the rich history of transplant at VCUHS and its' continued commitment to improve the lives of the transplant population in Central Virginia.
