Dr.
H.M. Lee was born on October 17, 1926 in Korea. In 1945, he
received his BS in Keijo Imperial University and in 1949 received
his M.D. in Seoul National University Medical School.
Dr Lee completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia
and became an Instructor of Surgery from 1963-1964 and Assistant
Professor of Surgery from 1964-1966. Dr. Lee became Professor
of Surgery in 1970 and Director, Clinical Transplant Program,
Chairman, Division of Vascular and Transplant Surgery, Medical
College of Virginia, and Director, Clinical Transplant Fellowship
Program in 1973. In 1986, he was also named Director, Fellowship
Program.
Dr. Lee’s academic appointments include Chairman of
the Division of Vascular Surgery from 1994-1996, Chairman,
Division of Vascular and Transplant Surgery from 1973-1994,
Professor Surgery from 1973-1996, Associate Professor of Surgery1966-1973,
Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1964-1966, and Instructor
from 1963-1964.
Dr. Lee was a member of the American Association of University
Professors, the American College of Surgeons, the American
Society of Nephrology, and the American Society of Transplant
Surgeons. From 1981-1983, Dr. Lee was the Secretary for the
American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the President
from 1984-1985. In 1986, he served on the Board of Directors
as Chairman of Asian American Health Forum, International
Cardiovascular Surgical Society, International Society for
Heart Transplantation, and the International Society of Nephrology.
From 1984-1985, he was President of the Korean Medical Association
of America Medical Society of Virginia. In 1984, he also served
on the Advisory Board for the National Kidney Foundation of
Virginia, the Network Coordinating Council of the Virginias,
New York Academy of Science, Renal Physicians Association,
Richmond Academy of Medicine, Richmond Surgical and Gynecological
Society. From 1988-1989, Dr. Lee was on the Board of Directors
for the Seoul National University College of Medicine Alumni
Association and the Society of Clinical Trials. He was President
of the Southeastern Organ Procurement Foundation, Southeastern
Surgical Society, Southern Association for Vascular Surgery,
Transplantation Society, Virginia Surgical Society, and the
Virginia Vascular Society.
Dr. Lee had received the following awards: University Award
of Excellence, Virginia Commonwealth University, Distinguished
Faculty Award, MCV Alumni Association, Excellence in Teaching
award, MCV Surgical Residents, Mainstream America Award for
Excellence in Medicine, Asian Pacific Council, Overseas Korean
Achievement Award, Seoul City, SEOPF/Upjohn Award for Distinguished
Service.
Dr. Lee retired from MCV Hospitals in 1997 as Chairman of
the Division of Vascular and Transplant Surgery, a position
he held since 1973, when his mentor, Dr. David Hume, died
in a plane crash. The H. M. Lee Professorship was established
in his name to honor Dr. Lee’s service to MCV’s
Department of Surgery at the Virginian Commonwealth University.
With his retirement, Dr. Lee left behind a career and reputation
that is admired by all. Since his retirement, Dr. Lee enrolled
in Law School and has since completed his law degree. Dr.
Hume-Lee remains one of the worldwide legendary pioneers of
transplantation.
