Who Can Participate?
Many specialty areas can provide care over telemedicine. Specialties currently involved include dermatology, infectious disease, nephrology, general surgery, oral surgery and cardiology. Other specialty areas have interested practitioners, such as psychiatry and neurology. Patients who can get to a site where telemedicine is available can participate. Medicare and Medicaid will reimburse for services if the patient resides in a rural community.
How Does It Work?
A clinic is organized at VCUHS and the practitioner comes to Gateway basement, location of the clinical telemedicine suite. A connection is established between the patient site and the clinician site.
Care is rendered over the connection, including video, audio, stethoscope, and hand held camera. Paperwork can be transferred between sites via fax or document imaging. Billing is accomplished either through the telemedicine clinic or the physician office.
VCUHS can connect via digital phone line (ISDN).
