Fine Art Collection

The Art & Health program at MCV Hospitals was initiated in 1986, the second of its kind in the country after Duke Health which was founded in 1978. Now named the Arts in Healthcare program, it manages a Fine Art Collection, which is valued at close to 5 million dollars composed of over 2000 original pieces of artwork by local, regional, and international artists. Healing architecture and gardens, art installations, and natural lighting help to decrease patient and caregiver stress, improve outcomes, enhance patient safety, simplify way finding, and increase overall quality of care. A healing work environment also contributes vastly to the job satisfaction of professional caregivers, reducing errors and increasing effectiveness.
