Pediatric End-of-Life Nursing Consortium (ELNEC) Workshop
Description: This is to announce the latest offering
of the Pediatric ELNEC Workshop, scheduled for April 8 - 9,
2010 at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
This workshop is co-sponsored by the DC Pediatric Palliative Care
Collaboration and the VCU Health System’s Pediatric Palliative
Care Department
If you are interested in or are involved in pediatric nursing
care, this will be an in-depth look at an often-difficult area of
a child's care, and will enhance your nursing practice as you
learn new information. This workshop, which is team-taught, will
cover topics on ethical and legal issues; communication pain and
symptom management; cultural aspects of palliative care; care at
the time of death; and grief and bereavement.

4th Annual Pathways to Knowledge Nurse Educator
Conference
We are pleased to announce that the 4th Annual Pathways to
Knowledge Nurse Educator Conference will be held April 23,
2010 at the Sheraton Park South Hotel in Richmond, Virginia!
The Conference will feature Julia Aucoin, DNS, RN-BC, CNE,
of North Carolina.
Description: This year’s conference will focus on
teaching Evidence-based Practice to staff, as well as how EBP is
used by staff development specialists (i.e. nurse educators).

About the speaker: Dr. Aucoin has worked in nursing
education and professional development for more than 25 years. As
both an academic and a practice educator, she employs creative
learning strategies, to make learning fun and make it stick. Dr.
Aucoin also maintains a consulting practice in Magnet Recognition,
NCLEX performance improvement, and accreditation issues for
educators.
She currently holds three academic appointments - Associate
Professor of Nursing at Winston-Salem State, Nova Southeastern,
and Kaplan Universities, and works with both undergraduate and
graduate students. Certified in both Nursing Professional
Development (ANCC) and Academic Education (NLN), she has served in
a leadership capacity in the development of both exams. Julie’s
nursing degrees are all from Louisiana State University Health
Science Center.

Conference: 4th Annual Pediatric Critical Care Conference
This is to announce that the 4th Annual Pediatric Critical Care
Conference will be held September 22, 2010!
Description: This conference is designed to provide
a venue for collaborations with colleagues and experts in the care
of critically ill infants and children, and is aimed at staff who
care for children at risk or who are critically ill in areas such
as the Emergency Room, the PACU, Bone Marrow and Solid Organ
Transplant, general care and rehabilitation, as well as in
pediatric critical care and progressive care units. We also
welcome staff in healthcare, social work, and rehabilitation/
occupational/ physical therapy and other areas of care.

Grand Rounds: Evidence-based Practice - The New Competency
This Institute for Innovative Nursing Practice Grand Rounds will
feature Kathleen M. White, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN of the
Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD.
Description: Nursing Grand Rounds will present the
story behind the development of The Johns Hopkins Nursing
Evidence-based Practice Model and Guidelines. The dilemma that the
developers faced in deciding to create an evidence-based
foundation for practice and how to involve staff nurses in the
endeavor.
About the Speaker: Dr. White is an Associate
Professor and Director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program
at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She holds a
joint appointment as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Johns
Hopkins Hospital and as Nurse Research Liaison at Howard County
General Hospital. She is a member of a collaborative team between
the JHH and JHUSON that developed the Johns Hopkins Nursing
Evidence-based Practice Model and Guidelines. This model has been
highlighted in several publications, including the Journal of
Nursing Administration and the Advisory Board Practice Exemplar
series. The research conducted on the model won the 2005 Sigma
Theta Tau International Research Utilization award. Dr. White has
been an active participant in many quality and safety initiatives
and has received numerous practice grants. In 2007, she was
appointed the Chairperson of the Maryland Patient Safety Center’s
Board of Directors.
Continuing Education: This CE activity has been
approved for 1.0 contact hour by the Virginia Nurses Association
Continuing Education Approval Committee, and accredited approver
by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on
Accreditation.
