Psychiatric Crisis Stabilization

Admissions are for psychiatric patients requiring a 23-hour or less stay, with a focus on rapid stabilization and intensive crisis intervention. The Crisis Stabilization Unit provides an area for discharged psychiatric patients who still require intervention, education for patients and family regarding illness, treatment, community resources, medical and psychiatric evaluations and develop and implement a treatment plan within two hours of admission.

A typical CSU patient profile includes the following characteristics:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • suicidal but willing to contract for safety
  • have an acute condition or exacerbation of chronic psychiatric condition
  • voluntary status
  • may have substance abuse issues
  • homeless or domiciled
  • frequent emergency room visits
  • first visit for psychiatric reasons
  • requires medication adjustment or initiation
  • requires connection with community resources

Exclusions include the following characteristics:

  • severe mental retardation
  • criminal status
  • active TB
  • chronic condition without acute exacerbation
