General Rehabilitation

The scope of care of the VCU Medical Center’s Rehabilitation and Research Center is the provision of interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitative care for adult and geriatric individuals with multiple and complex needs. The RRC is a 41-bed inpatient program located on the first and second floors of the North Hospital.

The RRC’s interdisciplinary program is composed of highly skilled members of the following core health care professions:

  • physiatry (rehabilitation medicine),
  • rehabilitation nursing,
  • speech language pathology,
  • therapeutic recreation,
  • social work,
  • clinical psychology,
  • occupational therapy and
  • physical therapy.

Medical and administrative leadership and support staff assists the interdisciplinary team. Other disciplines frequently supplement the work of the core team and include:

  • respiratory therapy,
  • nutritional support,
  • chaplaincy,
  • community health and
  • Department of Rehabilitation Services counselors.

The major rehabilitation diagnoses of patients on N1 are:

  • cerebral vascular accident,
  • spinal cord injury,
  • amputation,
  • multiple trauma,
  • hip fracture,
  • burn,
  • cardiopulmonary disorder and
  • arthritis and other disabling conditions.
