Admitting

The purpose of the Admission Unit is to decrease Emergency Department and Ambulatory Care holding time, and improve patient/nurse satisfaction. The staff of this eight-bed unit admits and cares for patients while waiting for their assigned floor bed to become available. The goal of this unit is to positively impact the length of stay for patients by starting treatment immediately. The Admission Unit is open between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Admissions are accepted from the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Care sites, Patient Access Services and directly from home or a nursing facility that meet the following criteria:

  • patients who are waiting for an inpatient bed
  • post-procedure patients that have not received conscious sedation
  • any service can admit to this unit with the exception of Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Obstetrics
  • patients age 16 and older
  • patients with contact precautions are accommodated by the private rooms
