Acute Care Medicine

Acute Care Medicine provides a variety of services to patients, families/significant others and students. Our patient population ranges from adult sized adolescents to geriatric. Types of patients served: Internal medicine patients and associated sub-specialties including Renal, Gastrointestinal, Pulmonary, Hepatology, Infectious Disease, Endocrine and Gerontology.

The medical procedures performed on the unit include:

  • paracentesis,
  • thoracentesis,
  • central line insertion,
  • chest tube insertion and
  • bone marrow biopsy.

In addition to providing routine care based on established patient care standards, nurses on this unit assess and monitor patients before and after diagnostic testing, PEG/J placement, biopsies and angiography/catheter-ization. They also are responsible for performing CAPD and for caring for patients in negative pressure isolation.

Common diagnoses on the unit include, but are not limited to,

  • congestive heart failure,
  • hypertension,
  • pancreatitis,
  • COPD
  • asthma,
  • bronchitis,
  • UTI
  • acute and end-stage renal failure,
  • liver failure,
  • complications of HIV,
  • Diabetes,
  • cellulitis,
  • connective tissue disorders and
  • Tuberculosis.
