Perisurgical Unit (PSU)

Gateway 5 also known as the Perisurgical Unit (PSU) is an exceptionally fast paced multi dimensional 28 bed unit. We pride ourselves with placing patient safety at our highest priority as we deliver patient centered care to a wide variety of pre-operative and post- operative surgical patients. PSU receives all pre-operative patients from all surgical specialties with the exception of the critical care patients'.

Our patient population is extremely diverse and span across the age spectrum. Aside from pre-operative patients, we also provide post operative, phase II, outpatient recovery for all surgical specialties. We utilize many teaching styles and resources to ensure our diverse patient population are well educated regarding the post operative care at home. Lastly, we provide post operative care for the twenty-three observations patients' population from the various specialties.

The use of a preliminary self scheduling tool was implemented within the unit to involve all staff participation. There is a Sunshine Fund that was developed to assist staff with illnesses, injuries or financial needs. The PSU utilizes the Shared Governance Model by identifying nurses participating in the various unit and hospital committees. We encouraged our nurses to align themselves with professional organizations and provide them with funding to attend conferences. We recognize our employees at staff meeting, safety star recognition, and employee of the month, newsletters and the new LEAFFS (Let Excellence Always Flow for Safety) program. These are just a few of the things that occur within our unit and extend to you an invitation to check us out.
