Acute Care Medicine provides a variety of services to
patients, families/significant others and students. Our
patient population ranges from adult sized adolescents to
geriatric. Types of patients served: Internal medicine
patients and associated sub-specialties including Renal,
Gastrointestinal, Pulmonary, Hepatology, Infectious Disease,
Endocrine and Gerontology.
The medical procedures performed on the unit include:
paracentesis,
thoracentesis,
central line insertion,
chest tube insertion and
bone marrow biopsy.
In addition to providing routine care based on established
patient care standards, nurses on this unit assess and
monitor patients before and after diagnostic testing, PEG/J
placement, biopsies and angiography/catheter-ization. They
also are responsible for performing CAPD and for caring for
patients in negative pressure isolation.
Common diagnoses on the unit include, but are not limited
to,
congestive heart failure,
hypertension,
pancreatitis,
COPD
asthma,
bronchitis,
UTI
acute and end-stage renal failure,
liver failure,
complications of HIV,
Diabetes,
cellulitis,
connective tissue disorders and
Tuberculosis.
