The Endoscopy Unit is located in the Gateway Building,
fourth floor. The Unit has five general procedure rooms; one
of these rooms is equipped for endoscopic ultrasound and
another for laser procedures. There is one fluoroscopy room,
one bronchoscopy room, and one multipurpose room where
motility, capsule endoscopy, over flow bronchoscopy, and
pediatric anesthesia procedures are done. There are thirteen
admission/recovery bays. The Unit's average daily census is
35 procedures. The VCU Health System
Endoscopy Unit provides comprehensive care for patients
undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal
endoscopic procedures, motility procedures, endoscopic
ultrasound, capsule endoscopy, and other gastrointestinal
testing. The nursing staff supports patient care for adult
and pediatric diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy and
pediatric TEE's. The dedicated nursing
staff offers patient education to promote understanding,
optimal health and well-being, as a part of their dedication
to providing friendly, courteous service, respecting patient
privacy and addressing patient comfort needs.
The Endoscopy Unit provides an area and atmosphere for the
education of gastroenterolgoy fellows, pulmonary fellows,
surgical residents, medicine residents and students in
medicine and nursing. Research in
disease processes, endoscopic procedures, endoscopic
equipment, new medications, and evidence based
gastroenterology nursing practice is encouraged.
