Reports of higher pollen counts have brought an increase in bothersome allergy symptoms across Virginia. Health professionals say symptoms in children may appear worse than in adults.

“Children, they are still in the phase of development of [their] organ systems, and so, every day they are changing to some degree,” said Dr. Wei Zhao, chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. “Their defense mechanism is not as good as a mature adult. So, therefore, to some degree, yes, they may present more symptoms.”
