Drivers should expect changes to traffic patterns near the Interstate-95 exits many use to get to downtown Richmond and VCU Medical Center during the spring.

Starting Friday, March 8, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will begin a major bridge rehabilitation project, which includes working on five bridges over I-95.

This is the first of several weekends when traffic will be affected by the roadwork. Future dates of lane closure and detours will be shared ahead of time.

If you need to plan a trip to VCU Medical Center or the MCV Campus, please plan accordingly so you can arrive safely and on time. For more information, please visit the Virginia Department of Transportation website.

Traffic impacts for the weekend of March 8 to March 11:

  • Lane reductions: At 8 p.m. Friday, the northbound and southbound travel lanes of I-95 at mile marker 74 will be reduced to one lane through Monday, March 11 at 6 a.m.
  • Broad Street access and closures: Exit 74C (I-95 north to Broad St.), Broad St. in both directions at the bridge over I-95 and the westbound ramp from Broad St. to I-95 will be closed through the weekend. Pedestrians will still have access to Broad Street.
  • Alternative routes: Detours will be in place to direct vehicle traffic around the work zone. Those traveling through the Richmond area are encouraged to use I-295, I-195, Route 288, and Route 1/301 to avoid significant delays.
