LifeEvac (Helicopter Transport)

Information

The VCU LifeEvac helicopter program serves the people of central and Southside Virginia as well as portions of North Carolina 24-hours per day, 7 days per week.  The program began operation in 2001 and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS).  The helicopter is based at the Dinwiddie County Airport.

VCU LifeEvac provides both scene and interfacility transfer of critically ill patients for areas that have previously not had this transport option available to them. With this service, hospitals and localities have the ability to transfer critically ill patients in a safe and timely manner. And in cases where seconds count, more efficient transport service could mean the difference between life and death.

All flight crew members have a background in emergency medicine and critical care and have undergone intensive, specialized training to become flight team members.  The team is composed of experienced flight nurses, flight paramedics and pilots.  Aviation services are provided by Air Methods Corporation.

VCU LifeEvac transports approximately 600 patients per year, and serves an approximate 100-statute mile radius.
