Dr. Retchin is currently chief executive officer of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. As Chief Executive Officer, he directs MCV Hospitals, the 779-bed teaching hospital of VCU, and MCV Physicians, the faculty practice plan, which includes approximately 600 faculty physicians. He also is vice president for health sciences at VCU. As Vice President, he has academic responsibility for the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health. Dr. Retchin received his undergraduate, medical and public health degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar from 1980 until 1982. He has been at VCU since 1986, and is currently a professor in the departments of Internal Medicine, Gerontology and Health Administration. Dr. Retchin has published numerous articles, monographs, books and book chapters on the costs, quality and outcomes of care. He also has published on workforce issues related to physician supply, on the consequences of medical savings accounts and on issues concerning the fiscal dependency of medical schools on clinical services. Dr. Retchin is a practicing, board certified internist, with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Medical Society of Virginia. He has been a fellow of the American College of Physicians since 1985. In 2004, Dr. Retchin was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina.
