HISTORY
Safe Kids Worldwide was founded in 1987 as the National SAFE KIDS Campaign by Children’s National Medical Center with support from Johnson & Johnson. The program evolved into the Safe Kids Worldwide program which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C.
Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) has been the lead agency for the state Safe Kids Virginia coalition since 2000. The program coordinator, Corri Miller-Hobbs, BS, RN, works together with the ten local coalitions and chapters in Virginia to ensure children are well educated about accidental injuries.
MISSION
The mission of Safe Kids is accomplished in a variety of ways by the state coalition. Safe Kids Virginia works with existing coalitions and chapters to assure continued development of their organization and outreach programs. Miller-Hobbs also collaborates with communities to establish new chapters in areas currently not served by Safe Kids. In addition, the program coordinator also provides data, education, and best practices to legislators to assist with advocacy efforts on a local, state, and federal level. The coordinator serves patients and families within VCUHS and Virginia communities through public education, activities and media campaigns. Safe Kids Virginia serves as a funding and information resource for Safe Kids coalitions and community members interested in injury prevention.
