The VCU Evans-Haynes Burn Center
History
Founded in 1947 by Dr Everett Evans, the Evans-Haynes Burn Center serves as the regional resource for the care of acute burns and reconstructive needs of burn survivors. In addition, The Evans-Haynes Burn Center also provides pre-hospital burn care education to firefighters, paramedics and EMTs through instruction in Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), a national curriculum designed by the American Burn Association.
Burn Prevention Resources
We also are an educational resource for local nursing schools, paramedic programs and the Special Operations Command Medic (SOCM) program, which trains armed service members prior to deployment.
Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR) is a program designed by The Phoenix Society to provide training to burn survivors or their family members willing to volunteer to offer peer support to victims. Volunteers assist individuals in adapting to a burn injury through sharing similar experiences.
If you are a burn survivor who would like to receive peer support or would like to offer peer support to others, please call 804-828-9240.
The Central Virginia Burn Camp was established in March 1994 by the Charlottesville Professional Firefighters Association. It is a fun, safe and exciting summer camp for young burn survivors. Since its inception, firefighters from across the Commonwealth and numerous organizations have assisted in making the Burn Camp a success.
The residential camp is designed to meet the social, physical, and psychological needs of children between the ages of 7 and 17. The dedicated staff of nurses, firefighters, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other interested volunteers strive to meet the special needs of the young burn survivor and to provide an environment of caring, compassion and camaraderie among young survivors.
Burn Survivor Sunday is our center's chance to bring together our burn center family, including current and former patients as well as staff. It is a day for survivors and their loved ones to celebrate life in a spirit of togetherness with other survivors and with those who have helped along the way. We hope to see you next year as we celebrate the indomitable spirit of our burn survivors.
