NSICU — After the Party's Over

After the Party’s Over is a dynamic interactive program that the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit has been putting on for over 20 years. This community project was developed by some concerned nurses within the unit after personally caring for teens involved in mainly motor vehicle crashes in which teens were either drinking or using drugs. These teens often did not survive or if they did suffered traumatic brain injury and were in a vegetative state. These nurses decided to take action to make change — as a result, After the Party’s Over Program was born.

Initially this program started as a film strip presentation and has since turned into a power point presentation set to music that the kids relate to. Various scenarios are reviewed, patient experiences shared, and pictures depicting crash scenes are shown. Towards the end of the program, two students are asked to volunteer and role play a medical provider/victim scenario. After this, students have a chance within an open forum to ask questions or share experiences. This also leads into reinforcing positive choices and discussing alternative behaviors.

Currently, After the Party’s Over serves area high schools in Henrico, Hanover, Prince George, Hopewell, Chesterfield, and Richmond.  These schools receive an invitation letter at the beginning of the school year. They are asked to call if they would like to schedule a presentation.  This program usually books through the year by September. Due to time constraints, staffing, and availability of volunteers usually two presentations are carried out per month in the various schools for the year.
