David W. Richardson, MD
Dr. Richardson, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, has been on the faculty of the Division of Cardiology since 1956. He has played a key role in growing VCU’s cardiology program from a small division within MCV to the comprehensive Heart Center it is today. He has held numerous administrative positions including Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program, Chairman of the Division of Cardiology, Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and the Virginia AHA Professor of Cardiology Research.
Throughout his career, Dr. Richardson has been involved in every aspect of academic medicine while always advancing the mission of the Medical Center, serving on committees as diverse as the MCV Group Practice Committee, the Cardiovascular Curriculum Committee and the MCV Faculty Senate. He has been equally involved in professional societies, community and national associations, and NIH advisory groups.
Dr. Richardson’s has been investigator or co-investigator of 10 extramurally funded research studies including landmark NIH studies such as the AMIS and BHAT trials. He has published more than 100 scientific articles in national and international medical journals. His research expertise in continuous intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring which documented the diurnal and activity variations in blood pressure resulted in visiting professorships at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, England (Dr. Sir George Pickering), and the Institute for Cardiovascular Research, University of Milan, Italy (Dr. Alberto Zanchetti).
In addition to his administrative and scholarly work, Dr Richardson has always been esteemed by his peers and students for his outstanding clinical skills and respect for patients. Dr. Richardson remains an active contributor to the Division, directing a weekly Cardiology Clinic.
Dr. Richardson is a Cum Laude graduate of Davidson College and earned his MD from Harvard University. He did his internship and residency at Yale University Medical School, New Haven Hospital and his cardiology fellowship training at Medical College of Virginia.
Dr. Richardson’s dedication to his patients, students and the field of cardiology has been recognized with establishment of the David Richardson Professorship in Cardiology, which is currently held by Dr. Michael Hess.
