WALTER N. MALLOY, MD

Dr. Malloy, a 1967 graduate of Morgan State College, Baltimore, Maryland, his hometown, and a 1971 graduate of Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, completed an internship and one year of residency in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was called to active duty in the Army of the United States and served one year of internal medicine residency at Walter Reed Army Hospital and one year in research at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. That was followed by two years of service as a staff physician at U.S. Kirk Army Hospital, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland; six months was spent as chief, Department of Medicine. Dr. Malloy achieved the rank of major in the Army before being discharged in 1977 with three honorable decorations: the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Era Ribbon, and the Army Commendation Medal.
For twelve years, Dr. Malloy practiced cardiology and internal medicine
at Tidewater Memorial/Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, where he was also
medical director of the intensive care unit, vice-president of the medical
staff for one year and president of the medical staff for six years. He then
practiced cardiology in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for a brief period.
Dr. Malloy joined the VCU Division of Cardiology on the MCV Campus in
1992 as assistant professor. His current academic interests include
cardiovascular physiology, tissue culture of human myocardium, regression
of atherosclerosis, interventional cardiology and psychosomatic medicine. He
has been equally active at VCU and on the MCV Campus, having served on the
University faculty senate, the School of Medicine¹s admissions committee,
and as an organizing member of the VCU Telemedicine Project beginning with
its inception in 1995, as well as various other teaching and academic
activities.
A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of
Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Dr. Malloy has been a
member of a number of professional societies, including the American Heart
Association, the Virginia Society for Cardiac Rehabilitation, the Virginia
Rural Health Association, and the American Telemedicine Association. His
committee service is outstanding, with involvement in numerous medical,
professional, civic and social organizations. Dr. Malloy is a life member
of the NAACP.
