Neil P. Lewis, MD

Dr. Lewis was born and educated in the UK. He received his medical degree from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1979. He completed training in internal medicine in London, Newcastle upon Tyne and Cambridge 1979-84. Dr. Lewis was research fellow at the Pharmacology Department, Cambridge University 1984-87, where he completed a Master’s degree and then a Doctorate on the biochemical pharmacology of renal angiotensin receptors. During this period he also completed fellowship training in nephrology and renal transplantation. Dr. Lewis subsequently completed fellowship training in cardiology at the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, then joined UWCM’s faculty as Lecturer 1989-92. Dr. Lewis is board certified in medicine and cardiology in the UK and EU.

In 1992, Dr. Lewis went to Stanford University School of Medicine, CA as British Heart Foundation International Fellow in cardiovascular medicine. At Stanford he trained in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, and in cardiovascular molecular biology. In 1994, Dr. Lewis became a resident in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and joined UVA’s cardiology faculty as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1996. In 2000, Dr. Lewis was appointed Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program at UBC, Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Lewis joined the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003 where he is Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program at the McGuire VA Medical Center.

Dr. Lewis has published more than 80 articles, abstracts and chapters in several areas including the biochemical pharmacology of angiotensin receptors, exercise pathophysiology, cardiovascular actions of erythropoietin, and the molecular pathobiology of the failing and transplanted heart. He is currently Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on a number of research projects including several funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Dr. Lewis is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians UK and British Cardiac Society.
