Andrea K. Hastillo, MD

Dr. Hastillo is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Pauley Heart Center’s Coronary Intensive Care Units and Director of Electrocardiography.

Born in Connecticut, Dr. Hastillo has spent almost her entire medical career at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, where she also did an internship and her first year residency training, both in Internal Medicine. She then came to MCV, where she completed her residency training and fellowship training in Cardiology. On faculty since 1974, her past academic appointments include Co-Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplantation Program and Director of Echocardiography.

Dr. Hastillo’s areas of academic and research interests include Acute Coronary Care, Heart Failure, Non-Invasive Cardiology and Medical Ethics. She has published more than 110 review articles and medical journal abstracts and 19 book chapters and has co-edited one full-length book. She also has presented numerous abstracts and exhibits at international and national conferences.

In addition to being a Clinical Fellow of the American Heart Association, Dr. Hastillo serves on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Bioethics Consortium and is a member of the Virginia Bioethics Network. She has enjoyed a long history of involvement with national, state and local committees and boards and remains active with numerous VCU/MCV committees, including the Critical Care (ICU) Committee and, for over 20 years, the Institutional Review Board. Currently, she is chairman of VCU’s Institutional Review Board Panel C, the committee that provides oversight for protection of humans involved in research.  She also has served as MII Cardiovascular Course Director for a number of years. A superior instructor, Dr. Hastillo has been named outstanding lecturer by medical students more than seven times.
