JAMES E. DAVIA, MD
Dr. Davia, Associate Professor, joined the Pauley Heart Center in 2000 after an already lengthy medical career in the military, academic and private sectors. A Chicago native, Dr. Davia received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he also graduated cum laude in 1962 with his M.D. He then began a more than 20-year career with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
After doing his cardiology fellowship training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Dr. Davia joined the clinical faculty at Georgetown University in 1971 for 12 years. He concurrently served for four years as assistant chief and then chief of cardiology service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in addition to being assistant professor and associate professor of uniform services at University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. In 1983, Dr. Davia then moved to Kansas, where he entered into private practice in cardiology until moving to the MCV Campus as associate professor in 2000.
Over the last 30 years, Dr. Davia has had more than 40 research studies published in top medical journals. He is a longtime fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology, and his editorial responsibilities have included the American Journal of Cardiology and Archives of Internal Medicine. Dr. Davia also is an active clinical cardiologist, involved in catheterization and interventional cardiology. In addition to his contributions to Walter Reed Hospital, Dr. Davia served the U.S. military as battalion surgeon with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii and chief of general medical service at Pennsylvania’s Valley Forge General Hospital.
