The Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been awarded the GE
"Imagination at Work Award" for innovation in NICU design.
Newly constructed in 2008, the NICU was created with the
special needs of preterm and critically ill babies and their
families in mind. This 40 bed unit is comprised of 32 single
family rooms and 4 rooms are specially equipped to accommodate
families with twins. |

Private Single Family
Rooms (NICU)
|
|
Private
rooms provide a quiet, healing environment where families
can nurture and bond with their babies, and gain
confidence in caring for them. Mothers choosing to
breastfeed can do so with privacy and comfort. The NICU
team supports family involvement in all aspects of care
infant care whenever they can (24hours a day, 7 days a
week) and encourages a parent to spend the

But
don't let the quiet, nurturing environment of the NICU
surprise you. The NICU has over 35 years of experience and
has cared for well over 20,000 preterm or critically ill
newborns. Although almost half of our infants have been
admitted due to complications associated with prematurity,
the other half requires specialty care. VCU Health
System's NICU is known for its expertise in advanced
respiratory care, particularly the use of high-frequency
ventilation and a life-sustaining therapy called
ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). Although the
vast majority of infants' admitted to the NICU are
delivered at VCU Health System, babies are often
transported for advanced therapies from other area
hospitals throughout the state of Virginia by our own
dedicated NICU Transport Team.
The NICU is staffed by specially trained physicians and
nurses who specialize or are certified in treating sick
newborns. In addition, nationally known surgical and
specialists, including brain specialists, heart
specialists, kidney specialists, and many other are
available to consult on any problem that arises in
infants.
