Work/Life Balance

Daycare

Deciding who will care for your children while you work is among the most personal and difficult decisions a family can make. At VCUHS, we strive to make the decision simple for you by offering top-notch, accredited care for our employees’ children. We also do our best to make our centers feel like home.

We opened our first child development center in 1982 under the direction of pediatric nurse Patsy Moon. Decades later, Patsy is still our director, and has grown our program from one center for 35 children to three centers serving more than 300 families.

Families in our childcare program enjoy:

  • Quality programs accredited by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of the Young Child). Less than two percent of all childcare programs earn this recognition.
  • The Reggio approach to learning, where children discover their talents through experiences and concepts rather than themes.
  • Top-notch staff with one of our city’s lowest childcare turnover rates, that are passionate and well-trained to teach children.
  • Unique programs made possible by our health system environment including employee/child mentoring, regular programs by health professionals and special visits from area senior citizens.

Our childcare centers also offer these additional benefits:

  • Extended hours: 6 a.m. to midnight
  • No fees for late pick-ups
  • All food and diapers provided
  • 24-hour care during school closings and times of crisis (like snow storms and hurricanes)
  • Dedicated care for sick children waiting for pick-up
  • Backup Child care
“When schools closed this year due to snow, they offered free childcare to my five year-old that is not even enrolled in the center, which I found to be nothing short of amazing. They did everything possible to accommodate every child with a parent who needed to work.”

Christina Blottner, Surgical Nurse

VCUHS also offers discounted rates at other community based day care centers.
