Community Outreach & Workforce Development

Q and A

Have a question about orientation for new employee, parking around VCUHS or nurse referrals? Check out the Q&A below.

Before Orientation

1) What paperwork do I need to complete prior to my first day of orientation or first day of work?

On your first day of new employee orientation or when meeting with a Human Resources representative prior to your first day please bring all New Hire Paperwork and two forms of identification with you.

The back of the Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) form details acceptable identification documents. You must provide the proper identification to Human Resources within three days of hire in order to continue your employment with VCUHS.

Also, you’ll need to complete a criminal record release form allowing VCUHS to access your criminal record.

If you have been hired into a position that requires a license or certification, you’ll be asked to show the original license during orientation. A copy of the license/certification will be maintained in your personnel file.

2) What is a pre-placement medial exam?

Before your first day, you’ll have a pre-placement medical exam at Employee Health Services (EHS) in the West Hospital at 1200 E. Broad Street, 1st floor, room 115. You’ll enter the West Hospital from the circular driveway. Click here for directions. You’ll also need to take your completed immunization record form with you to this appointment.

3) What about drug testing?

After finishing at Employee Health Services with your pre-placement medical exam, you’ll go to the Outpatient Testing Lab in the Gateway Building, located at 1200 East Marshall Street.

You’ll go to the admission desk on the first floor and tell the receptionist that you’re there for a pre-placement drug screen. Prior to the drug test, you will need to present a picture ID and sign a consent form.

4) Can I call Employee Health Services or the lab about my drug test?

No. All questions should be directed to your recruiter or employment specialist. He or she will notify you if the drug test is positive. If you are found to be ineligible for hire due to your drug test results, you will be informed prior to your start date and you will have to wait two years before being considered again for employment with VCUHS.

Orientation

5) Where do I park on my first day?

Parking is a challenge for everyone who works in downtown Richmond. On your first day, try the visitors’ deck located behind the main hospital on Clay Street. However, this deck is often completely filled with our patients and their families. If there is no parking in the deck, you may find parking on the street or in a private lot.

All of these options will cost between $5-10 for the day. Please allow extra time for parking during orientation. If you are new to the downtown area, you may want to consider riding the Greater Richmond Transit bus or carpooling with someone.

6) Where will I park on a regular basis, after my first day?

VCU hosts a parking office where our employees can become familiar with the parking options and costs downtown. For more information on parking, contact the office at 828-0501. The parking office is located on the Medical Campus at Leigh House, 1000 E. Clay Street first floor.

7) What do I wear on my first day?

Business casual is acceptable for orientation. Please remember that jeans, exercise attire, etc. is not considered appropriate for business.

8) What time is orientation?

The first day of orientation is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The second day of orientation is 8 a.m. to noon. The orientation agenda for the first day is:

First Day Orientation Schedule:
8 – 8:45 a.m. Welcome, Objectives & Administrative Items

11) Where do VCUHS employees have lunch?

While parking is a challenge downtown, finding a place to eat is not!

You are always welcome in the hospital cafeteria that offers many options from hot entrees to soup and salad bar, to pizza and sandwiches. Also on campus we have restaurants including: McDonalds, Alpine Bagel,
Chick-fil-A and BLIMPIE.

Off campus you will find street vendors as well as many fine restaurants in the area to choose from including the gardens of The Valentine Museum.

Recruiting

13) What if I know a nurse who would be a great fit for VCUHS?

Great question! We believe that growing our staff through our employee network is one of the best ways to find talented, qualified people. It could be a friend, colleague or family member.

That’s why we started the Employee Nurse Referral Program, where our employees earn cash for every candidate they introduce us to who becomes a VCUHS employee.

For example, an employee earns $3,000 for every successful fulltime RN referral he or she makes. Recently, we changed the program to include a $1,500 referral bonus for part time RNS and $500 for PRN nurses.

For more information on the Referral Bonus Program, visit the Intranet. If you know a registered nurse who might be interested in employment with VCUHS and would like Human Resources to contact them, please complete this form.

Note: We’ve tried to cover the most frequently asked questions. However, if you have any questions regarding any of this information, please contact your recruiter or employment specialist at 804-628-0918.
