Lifelong Learning and Continuing Education

Our world-class continuing education programs enable our nurses stay current with the dynamic nature of healthcare and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to offer exemplary patient care. Following a "Novice to Expert" approach, educational programs are organized into three education levels:

  • Competency assessment and orientation
  • Intermediate programs like comprehensive arrhythmia interpretation, preceptor training, delegation
  • Advanced programs like advanced hemodynamic monitoring and leadership development through the Nurse Manager Academy

Accredited programs also are offered through the VCU School of Nursing, an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Virginia Nurses Association. VNA is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Continuing education at the VCU Health System is not restricted to the classroom. As a major academic medical center, our nurses work as colleagues with faculty distinguished in their fields.

The success of our approach is evident in the number of our nurses who have received professional certification, been published or served as conference faculty.
