About Us

Progressive Patient Care

More than 80,000+ patients that we care for annually in our trauma center are at the heart of our mission to improve the quality of and access to patient care. These individuals – from the smallest newborns to centenarians – are equally important, each with unique specialty care needs and medical expertise.

Fortunately, we’re prepared at VCUHS to meet needs for young and old alike in nearly 200 different specialty areas. Our patients are from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds. Some can pay, some can’t. Regardless, we are committed to providing the same level of superior, compassionate, and innovative patient care.

This is a big part of the reason that Richmond-area consumers rank VCUHS as their No. 1 choice for health care, according to a recent survey by National Research Corporation.

“The access to Virginia’s best care is really incredible. During my high-risk pregnancy with my twins, I could pop down to the OB and be back in less time than most women would take just to get to their doctor’s office.”

Melissa Hunt, VCUHS Director of Nursing and Mother of Two

Our unwavering dedication to progressive patient care and community needs is reinforced by our focused commitment to research and leading-edge medicine. Are we proud? You bet.

What else makes us proud as a progressive care provider?

  • Our people - With more than 7,500 employees and still growing, we’re a family of resources taking care of not only patients, but also each other. Our nurse-to-patient ratio is one of the best in the region, and allows our healthcare professionals to deliver the uncompromising care they were trained to give.
  • Our facilities - We have 779 beds in our hospital to care for more than 30,000 admissions annually covering more than 170,000 total patient days.
  • Our innovation - We established the first civilian burn unit in the country, the Evans-Haynes Burn Center, which remains the only burn unit in Central Virginia.
  • Our collaboration - Through interdisciplinary teams, we collaborate in nearly 100 other specialty areas like the Children's Medical Center, the Transplant Center, the Heart Center, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children and the renowned Massey Cancer Center.
