The only Level I Trauma Center in central Virginia and one of just five in the state, the VCUHS provides comprehensive, specialized care for severely injured patients. As a Level I Center, the VCUHS offers 24-hour, on-site surgical staff and dedicated operating room space, along with round-the-clock access to laboratory services and sub-specialties.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is responsible for the delivery of emergency care in the VCUHS Emergency Department, where more than 80,000 patients are treated annually. State-of-the-art care is available for cardiac, trauma, pediatric and gynecologic/obstetric emergencies. From orthopaedic surgeons to neurologists, poison control to cardiologists, our specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to providing exceptional emergency care for all types of medical conditions. Treatment for patients with severe burns is managed through the Evans-Haynes Burn Center.

The Emergency Department provides care in three specialized treatment areas: Adult Acute Emergency, Child and Adolescent Emergency and Non-Acute Care. Each treatment area is staffed with highly qualified, board certified emergency medicine physicians, internists and pediatricians.

Patients who have sustained major injuries or those requiring surgical interventions are managed in the Adult Acute Emergency treatment area. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound imaging capabilities are available on site, in addition to advanced spiral head CT imaging for the evaluation of patients with head injuries. A sophisticated cardiac resuscitation unit, for managing patients in cardiac arrest, and a cardiac evaluation and treatment area, for evaluating patients with chest pain, are also available on site. Seriously ill patients with coronary artery disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, psychiatric disorders and other diseases are also treated in this area.

The Child and Adolescent Emergency treatment area provides care for the special needs of patients 18 years of age and younger with any type of medical/surgical or trauma need. Adult patients with minor emergencies not requiring extensive evaluation or treatment are treated in Non-Acute Care or “Fast Track” area.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is home to the Virginia Poison Center. As one of three such centers in the state, the Virginia Poison Center was established more than 20 years ago to provide emergency telephone information on poisoning for central and eastern Virginia. Board certified toxicologists are available for consultation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All patient transfer requests to the Emergency Department are coordinated by the VCUHS Transfer Center, which are directed to the Emergency Medicine attending physician in charge.
