Current Projects

Rural Telemedicine Project
With Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, Rappahannock General Hospital, Bay Aging and Three Rivers Health District, VCUHS is embarking on a project to provide specialty clinical care to the residents of Three Rivers Health District, located in eastern Virginia. This area encompasses the 10 counties that make up the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Cancer and Genetics
With the Massey Cancer Center we are looking at several options to create the ability to provide specialty care to rural patients impacted by cancer. We are also embarking on a project to unite the five rural cancer outreach program sites with VCU for clinical care and education.

Emergency Department
We are currently beginning a study to validate a mobile telemedicine unit, developed by MITAC. The current study will lead to the ability to provide telemedicine care from emergency vehicles, supervised by physicians in the Emergency Department.

OB/GYN
We are investigating the feasibility of providing care over telemedicine for prenatal women, and women who need colposcopy testing.

International
Through relationships established in Ecuador and Eastern Europe in conjunction with the NASA Research Partnership Center, MITAC, located on the VCU campus, care has been provided to patients who are at a great distance from VCUHS. A test bed has been established in Ecuador, to test telemedicine equipment and connections at great distances. Education from the faculty of VCU School of Medicine has been provided to several European countries.
